Beliefs & Values

“In essentials, unity. In nonessentials, liberty. And in all things, love.”
There are many things that we can “agree to disagree” on, but the following list are our essentials. We must be unified in these beliefs.

God

Eternal, Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omniscient

There is only one true God. God exists equally in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is revealed to us through His creation, the Scriptures, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. God perfectly defines and expresses truth and love to us, desiring relationship with every person.

Matthew 11:27, Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-4, 2 Corinthians 13:14, I John 4:16

Jesus

Lord, Savior

Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God, equal with God the Father and God the Spirit. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary and was fully God and fully man. During His earthly ministry His miraculous acts, sinless life, pure and perfect teachings, and fulfillment of prophecy confirmed His Deity. While He experienced human emotions, physical sufferings, and temptations He acted completely in obedience to the Father. He died for our sins, was buried, and was raised from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father and is our High Priest and Advocate, and will return again someday to claim His own and take them to Heaven.

Verses of Reference:
Matthew 1:22-23, John 1:1-3, Romans 8:3, Luke 4:21, Acts 3:18, 1 Corinthians 15:1-7, Philippians 2:5-11

Holy Spirit

Comforter, Counselor

The Holy Spirit is equal with God the Father and God the Son. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit indwells every person from the very moment of salvation. The Holy Spirit produces new life in us and helps each believer to understand Scripture, discern what is right, and provides the strength to serve and obey God. The Holy Spirit’s influence becomes greater and more effective in us as we yield to His leading in obedience.

Verses of Reference:
John 3:1-7, Romans 8:9-10, Ephesians 1:14, 4:30, 2 Corinthians 1:22, 5:5

Man

God’s own creation

Man is (we are) made in the image of God to be like Him in character. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin”. All have sinned against God, and as a result, will incur not only physical death, but a spiritual death, eternal separation from God. Only God’s mercy and love for us, through Christ’s sacrifice, makes it possible for each of us to have our sins forgiven and a relationship with Him.

Verses of Reference:
John 3:1, Genesis 1:27; Psalms 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 3:23

The Bible

Inspired, Inerrant, Infallible

The Bible is God’s Word. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture or error. The Bible is infallible, inerrant, and absolute truth. Where it speaks, we listen and obey.

Verses of Reference:
Psalms 12:6, 119:105, 160; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 1:13, 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21

Baptism

The Greek word for baptism is: baptizo. The definition is: to be immersed, to be buried in, to be sunken as a ship, to dip, to be put under. The Bible does speak of a spiritual baptism which is God’s part. Our part is the physical baptism in water by immersion in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is an act commanded by Christ and confirmed by the Apostles. The immersion into water connects the believer to the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and is a testimony of our faith. It is a public proclamation that we are a follower of Christ. In Baptism we are clothed in Christ.

Verses of Reference:
Matthew 28:19-20; Colossians 2:11-12; Romans 6:3-5, Galatians 3:26-29

Salvation

Forgiveness, Redemption, Adoption

Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ and God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ as Lord of his life. This is evidenced by repentance, confession, baptism by immersion, and a life committed to His service.

Verses of Reference:
John 1:12, 14:6; Romans 5:1, 6:23; Galatians 3:26; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5

Eternity

People will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is eternal death in Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life in Heaven. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. Mankind’s eternal destination is solely determined by ones acceptance or rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

John 3:16, 14:17; Romans 6:23; Romans 6:23, 8:17-18; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9; Revelation 20:15
